Juniper’s report on
‘Smart Wearable
Devices: Fitness, Health-
care, Entertainment &
Enterprise: 2013-2018’ contends
that the market attractiveness of
wearable technology has grown
and that smart wearable device
shipments including smart
watches and glasses will approach
130m by 2018, 10 times higher
than estimated previously.
Juniper notes that there are

TTNET IN-A-BOX
Turkey’s TTNET is using
PlayBox Technology channel-
in-a-box systems for four
HD live sports channels at
its transmission centre in
Istanbul. A division of Türk
Telekom, TTNET is the
largest internet service
provider in Turkey and now
offers Turkish-language
broadcast services under the
Tivibu trademark - home,
web, mobile and smart-TV.
Combining internet, TV,
fixed voice and mobile voice
services in a single bill,
TTNET is first in Turkey to
launch 'quad play'.
MENA UPLOADS
Two hours of video are being
uploaded every minute in
the MENA region to
YouTube. Only 3% of online
content is in Arabic, even
though market research
company Common Sense
Advisory says the online
Arabic speaking population
(80m across the 20 countries
tracked by CSA) now
surpasses that of Russian,
French and German
speakers. Spotting the
opportunity, YouTube
launched its monetisation
policy last year in the UAE,
Saudi Arabia and Egypt,
enabling users to earn
money depending on the
content uploaded.
OSCE CAMPAIGN
The scale of attacks on and
harassment of members of
the media continues to grow
throughout the OSCE region.
Now OSCE Representative
on Freedom of the Media
Dunja Mijatovic has launched
a global campaign to end
impunity for crimes committed
against journalists. Initiated
by the Commission for the
Investigation of Murders of
Journalists in Serbia, the
campaign includes a video
in English, Russian and
Serbian. Mijatovic says it is
imperative that we stand up
for journalism and calls on
everyone to share and
promote the video.

Arabsat ‘Most Promising
Company of the Year’
At SATCON 2013 in New York, the
Annual Vision Award was
presented to Arabsat as winner
of “Most Promising Company of
the Year”. The international
award honours companies that
experience growth in the
markets they serve and
demonstrate long-term viability
of their enterprise. Eng. Khalid
Balkhyour, President & CEO of
Arabsat said the award came at
the end of a successful business
year, both regionally and
globally.
In December MBC Bollywood,
famous for Indian movies and TV
series dubbed and translated
into Arabic, joined the MBC
Group bouquet on Arabsat
satellite Badr-4.
Earlier Arabsat announced a
transition plan for load
distribution between its Badr-4,
Badr-5 and Badr–6 satellites, in
order to accommodate the
growing demand for TV
broadcast services on its
exclusive orbital position 26°
degrees East.
Juniper Research has identified
2014 as the watershed year for
wearable devices, both in terms
of roll-outs and market traction.
The entry of new players
(including Qualcomm, HTC, Dell,
and Asus) into the sector,
together with both product
launches and version upgrades
IN BRIEF
wearable devices. However, not
all of these hurdles will apply to
every device, or indeed, every
type of device. Issues such as
privacy commonly arise if the
wearable device (e.g. smart
glasses) has a camera and gives
the appearance of filming at all
times. While in many places
there are no laws regarding
filming in public places, many
people may object if they perceive
they are being filmed. As more
wearables products are rolled out,
Juniper expects that governments
will in turn seek to develop
regulatory frameworks to
legislate their use, both from a
privacy and data protection
perspective.
BBG
research
The Broadcasting Board of
Governors offers monthly research
briefings in partnership with the
research company Gallup to
present detailed media
consumption data on a country-
by-country basis. The focus of
the November briefing was on
global hotspots Mali and
Somalia. December’s event
focused on Vietnam, where
research shows that 98% of
Vietnamese households own a
TV set, and nearly nine in 10 have
a mobile phone.
The events include a
presentation of the key findings
on media consumption as well
as a methodological overview
and a review of historical media
trends. Video recordings and
research briefs are available
online.
In 2013, programming across
the BBG’s global media networks
reached an estimated 206m
people per week, a record high.
The BBG’s largest audiences are
in Indonesia (21.6m), Nigeria
(20.7m), Mexico (14.9m), and Iran
(14.5m).
